Two well-respected US peace activists, CODEPINK and Global Exchange cofounder Medea Benjamin and retired Colonel and diplomat Ann Wright, were denied entry into Canada On October third. The two women were headed to Toronto to discuss peace and security issues at the invitation of the Toronto Stop the War Coalition. At the Buffalo-Niagara Falls Bridge they were detained, questioned and denied entry. "In my case, the border guard pulled up a file showing that I had been arrested at the US Mission to the UN where, on International Women's Day, a group of us had tried to deliver a peace petition signed by 152,000 women around the world," says Benjamin. "For this, the Canadians labeled me a criminal and refused to allow me in the country." "The FBI's placing of peace activists on an international criminal database is blatant political intimidation of US citizens opposed to Bush administration policies," says Colonel Wright, who was also Deputy US Ambassador in four countries. "The Canadian government should certainly not accept this FBI database as the criteria for entering the country." Both Wright and Benjamin plan to request their files from the FBI through the Freedom of Information Act and demand that arrests for peaceful, non-violent actions be expunged from international records. "It's outrageous that Canada is turning away peacemakers protesting a war that does not have the support of either US or Canadian citizens," says Benjamin. "In the past, Canada has always welcomed peace activists with open arms. This new policy, obviously a creature of the Bush administration, is shocking and we in the US and Canada must insist that it be overturned. Four members of the Canadian Parliament-- Ann Wright told OpEdNews that this was the second time the two Code Pink activists had been turned away from the border, the first event ocurring on August 19th. Wright explained, "We decided to go to Canadian border to push the envelope to see if the Canadian Gov would not let us into Canada again until we had been "criminally rehabilitated. To be criminally rehabilitated, they would have to do a huge amount of paperwork and state that they were no longer going to commit the "crimes" they were convicted of. Wright told OpEdNews "We were told (by the canadian border agents) if we tried to enter Canada again, we would be officially deported from the country, which is "big trouble. 'We've warned you not to come back until we are criminally rehabilitated. Wright asserted, "We will never be criminally rehabilitated since we intend to continue to engage in non-violent peaceful protest of Bush administration policies, particular the war on Iraq and we intend to peacefully and nonviolently protest all of these until they end. They can lead to arrests for civil disobedience, like refusing to move from the fence in front of the whitehouse or standing up and speaking at congressional hearings." Wright explained that the Canadians, by their own law, do not allow people in who have been convicted of various kinds of offenses. If, when you are asked by a Canadian immigration officer if you have been arrested, they check the FBI database and that's how they found we were listed. Wright added, "The fact that the FBI has put us on this list. The National Crime Information Center Computerized Index is a form of political intimidation. The list is supposed to be for felony and serious misdemeanor offenses. "We don't qualify-- it's for sex offenders, foreign fugitives, gang violence and terrorist organizations, people who are on parole, a list of eight categories all together. "It is very disturbing. We've asked our congressional representatives to investigate this." According to Wright, there was almost no coverage of this in the US, except for an AP release. In Canada, Toronto's Globe and Mail and several other newspapers and three Canadian TV stations covered it. One less radical black voice in Congress Don't you think that if Arab-American groups or African-American groups targeted an incumbent white liberal, maybe Jewish, congressperson, and shipped in money by the truckload to oust the incumbent, the rafters would shake with bellows of outrage. Yet when a torrent of money from out of state American Jewish organizations smashed Earl Hilliard, first elected black congressperson in Alabama since Reconstruction, you could have heard a mouse cough. Hilliard had made the fatal error of calling for some measure of even-handedness in the Middle East. So he was targeted by AIPAC and the others. Down he went, defeated in the Democratic primary by Artur Davis, a black lawyer who obediently sang for his supper of the topic of Israel. Who do "your" politicans represent? ![]() John J. of the most controversial articles in recent memory. Originally
published in the London Review of Books in March

provoked both howls of outrage and cheers of gratitude for challenging
what had been a taboo issue in America: the impact of the Israel lobby

Unmasking AIPAC
What
does AIPAC's control of our Congress mean for the American people?
Arguably, that influence propelled the U.S. into war against Iraq with
its inevitable consequences in death, destruction and debt leaving the
nation bereft of a resolution; it has solidified perception around the
world that Israel's defiance of the UN resolutions demanding that it
obey international law regarding right of return for Palestinians and
return of occupied territory is not just condoned by the U.S. but is
the policy of the U.S., making the United States a co-partner in
international crime.

September 26, 2007 Protest sponsored by the Dorothy Day Catholic Worker Air Force Association Arms Bazaar Marriott Wardman Park Hotel Washington DC ![]() From
Dorothy Day Catholic Workers:
From September 24-26, the Air Force Association (AFA) is holding its annual Air & Space Convention and Technology Expo--"Arms Bazaar"-- at the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel. This year's convention features the "Global Air Chiefs." There will be speeches by military officials, lavish meals, parties, and a $200+ per plate banquet. 125 military contractors will peddle their newest weaponry and technology to Pentagon officials and agents from other nations. These weapons are used to terrorize and kill people in such places as Iraq, Afghanistan, Colombia, Palestine, and throughout Africa. These weapons fuel the over thirty wars raging around the world today. Top military officials and arms makers, who reap huge profits from weapons contracts, will discuss how the U.S. can maintain global military dominance and control space.
To ensure control of nearly half of the earth's resources, the U.S.
practices terrorism by acts of military intervention, supplying
weapons, military training and aid to corrupt regimes. We call
for an end to the "long-war" poilcy of terror. We call for and
end to preemptive/ preventive war. We call for an end to all war. It is
time for the U.S., the world's leading nuclear superpower and arms
dealer, to stop dominating other nations, disarm and develop a foreign
policy based on nonviolence and the universal declaration of human
rights. It is time for the rich and powerful to stop misusing the
earth's resoureces for weapons, war and killing. It is time to denounce
all racism and scapegoating, alleviate poverty and
meet urgent human needs. It is time to declare peace based on justice!
Please join us as we decry this scandal and memorialize the victims of
poverty and war. In the name of God who calls us not to kill and to
beat all weapons into plowshares, in the name of the victims killed by
weapons displayed at the Marriott, and in the name of the poor and the
children, we demand an end to the AFA Arms Bazaar!

bird-cage liner WashPo lies about protest, You're Wrong About the War, and About the Rally, Too Why would The Post misrepresent the number of antiwar, anti-administration protesters here in Washington on Sept. 15? The Associated Press said that organizers estimated that more than 100,000 people attended the rally and march, and while that couldn't be confirmed, "there appeared to be tens of thousands of people in attendance." Columnist Marc Fisher, however, put the tally at "the several thousand people who devoted their Saturday to the constitutionally sacred act of sounding off in their nation's capital" ["Online Fervor Over the Iraq War Hits the Streets With a Big Thud," Metro, Sept. 16]. A Post story used a law enforcement estimate of "closer to 10,000." Given that he interviewed participants, Fisher apparently deigned to attend the demonstration, but he didn't seem to have attended the same event I participated in. I talked to many people, friends and strangers alike, and every one of them was surprised and pleased by the large number of participants. -- J.E. Blackburn I object to your Sept. 16 headline "Dueling Demonstrations," in the A section. The antiwar rally was organized first; the other was a much smaller rally organized in response to it. You made no mention of the relative turnout for the two rallies. I was at Lafayette Square, where a dedicated crowd of thousands assembled. On C-SPAN, there appeared to be about a thousand at the other rally. Should you have mentioned that thousands more were at the antiwar rally? -- Charles Eisenhauer I'm mystified that your editorials continue to support President Bush's policy of staying in Iraq. In describing the recent testimony by Gen. David H. Petraeus to Congress ["A Long View," editorial, Sept. 11], The Post admitted that the surge has failed to meet a primary objective of fostering political reconciliation, yet only asked rhetorically: "Should the missions of American forces remain unchanged?" This was followed by: "That's a question that the president must answer." You also have called the president's policy "the least bad plan" [editorial, Sept. 14]. I'm bewildered that you continue to support staying in this war when The Post, of all media organizations, has been the source of so much information that causes me to oppose Bush's escalation and "stay the course" policy. The Post has unveiled a mountain of information on Iraq showing the futility of American military muscle. You have detailed the enormous human and financial cost of the war and repeatedly exposed this president for tampering with the truth. The Post has been the source of blistering war commentaries from Eugene Robinson, Richard Cohen, David Ignatius, E.J. Dionne Jr., Colbert I. King, George F. Will and Jim Hoagland. As an avid Post reader, I can only wonder whether the editorial board is reading its own newspaper. -- Holly Stallworth ![]() Thanks Jen Sorensen from our friends at ImpeachBush.org 100,000 march for
impeachment, against the war
On Saturday, nearly 100,000 people from all walks of life, young and old, of all nationalities and creeds, marched together, united by a single purpose, determined to end the war. The impeachment movement was a huge part of this demonstration and the call for impeachment resounded from the White House to the Capitol. People took buses, trains, vans, and planes from all over the country to make it to Washington DC for the March, and it was reflected in the massive turnout. The protest included one of the anti-war movement's largest collective acts of civil disobedience. Around 5,000 people laid down in mass as part of a dramatic die-in at the foot of the Capitol steps to symbolize all those lives that have been lost in this destructive war. Another two hundred were arrested when they tried to take an anti-war message to the Congress and were stopped by riot police. The SURGE: Success

Who cares? It's like discussing the success or failure of a carjacking, except that a million people have been slaughtered in this crime. The Imperial Occupation of Iraq must be opposed regardless of the success or failure of its perpetrators.
