You're Wrong About the War, and About the Rally, Too Why would The Post misrepresent the number of antiwar, anti-administration protesters here in Washington on Sept. 15? The Associated Press said that organizers estimated that more than 100,000 people attended the rally and march, and while that couldn't be confirmed, "there appeared to be tens of thousands of people in attendance." Columnist Marc Fisher, however, put the tally at "the several thousand people who devoted their Saturday to the constitutionally sacred act of sounding off in their nation's capital" ["Online Fervor Over the Iraq War Hits the Streets With a Big Thud," Metro, Sept. 16]. A Post story used a law enforcement estimate of "closer to 10,000." Given that he interviewed participants, Fisher apparently deigned to attend the demonstration, but he didn't seem to have attended the same event I participated in. I talked to many people, friends and strangers alike, and every one of them was surprised and pleased by the large number of participants. -- J.E. Blackburn I object to your Sept. 16 headline "Dueling Demonstrations," in the A section. The antiwar rally was organized first; the other was a much smaller rally organized in response to it. You made no mention of the relative turnout for the two rallies. I was at Lafayette Square, where a dedicated crowd of thousands assembled. On C-SPAN, there appeared to be about a thousand at the other rally. Should you have mentioned that thousands more were at the antiwar rally? -- Charles Eisenhauer I'm mystified that your editorials continue to support President Bush's policy of staying in Iraq. In describing the recent testimony by Gen. David H. Petraeus to Congress ["A Long View," editorial, Sept. 11], The Post admitted that the surge has failed to meet a primary objective of fostering political reconciliation, yet only asked rhetorically: "Should the missions of American forces remain unchanged?" This was followed by: "That's a question that the president must answer." You also have called the president's policy "the least bad plan" [editorial, Sept. 14]. I'm bewildered that you continue to support staying in this war when The Post, of all media organizations, has been the source of so much information that causes me to oppose Bush's escalation and "stay the course" policy. The Post has unveiled a mountain of information on Iraq showing the futility of American military muscle. You have detailed the enormous human and financial cost of the war and repeatedly exposed this president for tampering with the truth. The Post has been the source of blistering war commentaries from Eugene Robinson, Richard Cohen, David Ignatius, E.J. Dionne Jr., Colbert I. King, George F. Will and Jim Hoagland. As an avid Post reader, I can only wonder whether the editorial board is reading its own newspaper. -- Holly Stallworth ![]() Thanks Jen Sorensen from our friends at ImpeachBush.org 100,000 march for
impeachment, against the war
On Saturday, nearly 100,000 people from all walks of life, young and old, of all nationalities and creeds, marched together, united by a single purpose, determined to end the war. The impeachment movement was a huge part of this demonstration and the call for impeachment resounded from the White House to the Capitol. People took buses, trains, vans, and planes from all over the country to make it to Washington DC for the March, and it was reflected in the massive turnout. The protest included one of the anti-war movement's largest collective acts of civil disobedience. Around 5,000 people laid down in mass as part of a dramatic die-in at the foot of the Capitol steps to symbolize all those lives that have been lost in this destructive war. Another two hundred were arrested when they tried to take an anti-war message to the Congress and were stopped by riot police. WashPo Photos of the September 15 March ![]() Gathering of Smeagols Sometimes there are counter-protesters. We are always glad to see them. We could not invent stupidity like this. The Associated Press coverage of the weekend activities estimated the anti-war group’s numbers at 100,000 and the Gathering of Eagles, the group sponsoring the pro war demo, at 1000. An online attendance pledge circulated by the Gathering of Eagles organization had garnered 1838 signatures as of September 17, two days after the event. Of course, they claim, the mainstream media refuses to acknowledge the real numbers. Mmmm. None Dare Call It Genocide By Llewellyn H. Rockwell, Jr. 09/18/07 "LewRockwell" -- -- -How comfy we are all in the United States, as we engage in living-room debates about the US occupation of Iraq, whether "we" are bringing them freedom and whether their freedom is really worth the sacrifice of so many of our men and women. We talk about whether war aims have really been achieved, how to exit gracefully, or whether we need a hyper-surge to finish this whole business once and for all. But there's one thing Americans don't talk about: the lives of Iraqis, or, rather, the deaths of Iraqis. It's interesting because we live in an age of extreme multiculturalism and global concern. We adore international aid workers, go on mission trips abroad, weep for the plight of those suffering from hunger and disease, volunteer in efforts to bring plumbing to Ecuador, mosquito nets to Rwanda, clean water to Malawi, human rights to Togo, and medicine to Bangladesh. But when "we" cause the calamity, suddenly there is silence. There is something odd, suspicious, even disloyal about a person who would harp on the deaths of Iraqis since the US invasion in 2003. Maybe a person who would weep for Iraq is really a terrorist sympathizer. After all, most of the deaths resulted from "sectarian violence," and who can stop crazed Islamic sects from killing each other. Better each other than us, right? Well, it's about time that we think about the numbers, even though the US military has decided that body counts are not worth their time. Opinion Research Business, a highly reputable polling firm in the UK, has just completed a detailed and rigorous survey of Iraqis. In the past, the company's results have been touted by the Bush administration whenever the data looks favorable to the US cause. But their latest report received virtually no attention in the US. Here is the grisly bottom line: more than one million people have been murdered in Iraq since the US invasion, according to the ORB. Yes, other estimates are lower, but you have to be impressed by what they have found. It seems very credible. Speaking of genocide ... your American tax dollars at work The Israeli Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine The Sabra and Shatila Massacre September 15-17 1982 ![]() September 15, 2007 will mark the 25th anniversary of the Sabra and Shatila Massacre. From September 15-17, 1982, Lebanese fascist paramilitaries, under the watchful eyes of the Israeli military occupiers, slaughtered more than 2,000 Palestinian residents of two refugee camps in Beirut. The overwhelming majority of those murdered were women, children and elderly men. Thousands of people will march on September 15 in Washington DC to demand the immediate end of the war in Iraq. On that day we, along with people throughout the world, will also remember and salute the victims of the Sabra and Shatila Massacre. The Arab people, throughout the Middle East must have justice and self-determination. In June 1982, the Israeli military (IDF), with full support of the Reagan regime, launched a massive invasion of Lebanon. The objectives of the invasion were to destroy the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), then based mainly in Lebanon, and install a puppet government in Beirut. The U.S. continually re-supplied the IDF throughout the war. The invasion of Lebanon culminated in the Sept. 15-17 rampage through two disarmed Palestinian refugee camps by 1,500 fighters of the racist and fascist Lebanese Forces, one of the right-wing Lebanese organizations allied with Israel. For the entire summer of that year, the IDF mercilessly bombed the Lebanese capital, killing more than 20,000 people, the vast majority of them civilians. In September 1982, a ceasefire agreement was forced upon the Lebanese and Palestinians resisting the assault. Palestinian refugees made up more than 10 percent of Lebanon's population of 3 million at the time. Bush Calls for Permanent US Military Occupation of Iraq Bush’s nationally televised speech, delivered Thursday evening from the Oval Office, was the low point of a week of lies and absurdities designed to justify the United States’ bloody colonial war in Iraq. The ugly farce began with the congressional testimony Monday and Tuesday of Gen. David Petraeus, the top US commander in Iraq, and US Ambassador Ryan Crocker. Bush cited their fraudulent assessment of the “success” of the military “surge” to outline a perspective for continuing the American occupation of Iraq and transforming the country into a permanent American protectorate, whose vast oil resources will be exploited by US oil companies, and whose territory will be used as a staging ground for military attacks on Iran and a strategic base for American domination of the Middle East. Bush was, as usual, shameless in his piling up of lie upon lie, beginning with his portrayal of a gradual reduction in the 30,000 additional combat troops sent to Iraq in the military escalation he announced last January as a “new phase” in the war that could see a significant decline in fighting and troop levels. As is well known, the phasing out of the surge is dictated by the lack of additional forces to replace troops whose tours of duty will be coming to an end. It had never changed hands before. For a down payment, Silverstein put up only $14 million of his own money, and his friends at the powerful investment bank Blackstone Group kicked in another $111 million. After 9/11, Silverstein demanded a whopping $7 billion insurance payout, in the form of two $3.5 billion payments. He argued the two different plane crashes were two separate "occurrences" of two separate attacks. Dear Larry Silverstein... Silverstein was also given the right to rebuild thestructures, should they be destroyed. The deal was described in a press release on July 24, 2001: "Silverstein Properties, Inc., and Westfield America, Inc. will lease the Twin Towers and other portions of the complex in a deal worth approximately $3.2 billion – the city's richest real estate deal ever and one of the largest privatization initiatives in history.
