Animal and plant species have begun dying off or changing sooner than predicted because of global warming, a review of hundreds of research studies contends. These fast-moving adaptations come as a surprise even to biologists and ecologists because they are occurring so rapidly.

At least 70 species of frogs, mostly mountain-dwellers that had nowhere to go to escape the creeping heat, have gone extinct because of climate change, the analysis says. It also reports that between 100 and 200 other cold-dependent animal species, such as penguins and polar bears are in deep trouble.

Iraqis Want a Speedy U.S. Exit --
and Back Attacks on Our Forces

NEW YORK Past surveys have hinted at this result, but a new poll in Iraq makes it more stark than ever: the Iraqi people want the U.S. to exit their country. And most Iraqis now approve of attacks on U.S. forces, even though 94% express disapproval of al-Qaeda.

At one time, this was primarily a call by the Sunni minority, but now the Shiites have also come around to this view. The survey by much-respected World Public Opinion (WPO), taken in September, found that 74% of Shiites and 91% of Sunnis in Iraq want us to leave within a year. The number of Shiites making this call in Baghdad, where the U.S. may send more troops to bring order, is even higher (80%). In contrast, earlier this year, 57% of this same group backed an "open-ended" U.S. stay.

By a wide margin, both groups believe U.S. forces are provoking more violence than they're preventing -- and that day-to-day security would improve if we left.

The Reuters news agency has today reported on Former U.S. Army Brigadier General Janis Karpinski's assertions that outgoing Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld authorized the mistreatment of detainees at Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq. This is an issue we broke over a year ago but at the time it was the subject of a media blackout.

Karpinski, who ran the prison until early 2004, told Spanish newspaper El Pais that she saw a memorandum signed by Rumsfeld detailing the use of harsh interrogation methods.

The death of Milton Friedman has been an occasion for celebrating the magic of capitalism, and fair enough. Capitalism is pretty great, and Friedman was its feisty defender when that was far from a universally held view. But let’s not get carried away. There are things capitalism does not do well and other things that masquerade as capitalism at work and claim its virtues, but aren’t entitled. Capitalism is brilliant at setting the price of potatoes. But how good is it at setting the price of a large company? To all appearances, the stock market is capitalism operating under near-laboratory conditions. Financial markets deal almost entirely in electronic blips. Supply and demand can chase each other around the world with no actual goods to get in the way, and prices can adjust constantly and instantaneously. Yet the prices set in financial markets are patently wrong.

Bush took on Arab critics of his son Tuesday during a testy exchange at a leadership conference in the capital of this U.S. ally. “My son is an honest man,” Bush told members of the audience harshly criticized the current U.S. leader’s foreign policy. WHILE Israel fights Hezbollah with tanks and aircraft, its supporters are campaigning on the internet.

Israel’s Government has thrown its weight behind efforts by supporters to counter what it believes to be negative bias and a tide of pro-Arab propaganda. The Foreign Ministry has ordered trainee diplomats to track websites and chatrooms so that networks of US and European groups with hundreds of thousands of Jewish activists can place supportive messages.

In the past week nearly 5,000 members of the World Union of Jewish Students (WUJS) have downloaded special “megaphone” software that alerts them to anti-Israeli chatrooms or internet polls to enable them to post contrary viewpoints. A student team in Jerusalem combs the web in a host of different languages to flag the sites so that those who have signed up can influence an opinion survey or the course of a debate.

Jonny Cline, of the international student group, said that Jewish students and youth groups with their understanding of the web environment were ideally placed to present another side to the debate.

The UN created Israel in 1948 with UN Resolution 181. The UN passed UN Resolution 194 telling Israel to allow people they drove out to return to their homes. That was the first UN Resolution Israel broke, in the same year they were created. If 194 isn't valid, neither is 181.

Let’s go first to that moment of good cheer on the morning after. Horrible senators like Allen and Burns lost narrow races. The Republicans got a pasting. A man who called Alan Greenspan “a political hack” and George Bush “a liar” will be Senate majority leader. A woman elected to Congress with the help of thousands of San Franciscan homosexuals, some of them married by Mayor Gavin Newsom, would be Speaker.

Who wouldn’t want Harry Reid instead of Bill Frist, or Nancy Pelosi instead of fatty Hastert? It’s also the role of elections in properly run western democracies to remind people that things won’t really change at all. Certainly not for the better. You can set your watch by the speed with which the new crowd lowers expectations and announces What is Not To Be Done. Nowhere was there an item on the Democrats’ “must do” list saying “Reverse plunge towards fascism. Rescind Patriot Act. Dump the Military Commissions Act. Restore habeas corpus and the Bill of Rights.”

Pelosi made haste to say: impeachment is off the table. “Bold new vision” these days means Pelosi pledging a drive to notch up the minimum wage. I don’t know about the vineyard, hotel and restaurant that Pelosi co-owns, but the effective minimum wage here in Humboldt country, northern California, is about $10 an hour, which is what you have to promise a young person to mow the yard. The pay-out rises rapidly to $13 an hour if you want to buy the tyke’s loyalty for return visits. Maybe on some slave plantation in southern Florida attainment of the federal minimum wage is part of the American Dream , but elsewhere we have to talk about a Living Wage, which is something altogether different.

But who cares! No one believes the Democrats are ever going to mess with the system, and that’s not why the voters put them back in charge of Congress. They want America out of Iraq. Pronto, just like Rep Jack Murtha said it should, this time last year. To her credit and the chagrin of the Washington Post as well as Fox News Pelosi backed Jack Murtha against pro-war Steny Hoyer to be House Majority Leader and said that Jane Harmon shouldn’t chair the House Intelligence Committee.

A couple of days later the House Democratic caucus sent Hoyher cantering home 149-86, with Hoyer cheered on by the Washington Post, which ran nasty stories about Murtha; also by the New York Times which ran two dreadful stories by Michael Gordon saying this was not the time for the US to leave Iraq.

So at most you can reckon there are 86 antiwar votes on the Democratic side of the aisle in the new House of Representatives. Over on the senate side, Harry Reid, who’d been calling for “redeployment” of US troops out of Iraq “within the next few months” told his fellow Democrats that the issue of what to do in Iraq shouldn’t be raised till James Baker and his Iraq Study Group issue their report.

Optimists somehow imagine the Baker Report will explode excitingly under the war’s partisans and blow them sky-high. It’ll do nothing of the sort. There’ll be paragraphs of soggy language about the promise of democratic governance and the rule of law in Iraq, raised fingers of warning about the perils of failure, acres of statesmanspeak about the need for multilateral involvement.

Probably, Baker and Co think the US should quit Iraq, but can’t think of a way of accomplishing this without jump-starting charges across the next two years that America is cutting and runnng and is this any way to run an Empire? McCain’s saying that already.

Military Recruits Come From Poor Areas

United Press International | November 03, 2005 WASHINGTON -

Most military recruits in the United States come from areas in which household income is lower than the national median, a non-profit group says. Nearly two-thirds, 64 percent, of recruits to the military were from counties that have average incomes lower than the national median National Priorities Project said.

The group looked at Department of Defense data for 2004. According to NPP, 15 of the top 20 counties that had the highest numbers of recruits had higher poverty rates than the national average, and 18 of the top 20 had higher poverty rates than the state average. The U.S. military has long been considered a step away from economic hardship, a trend that is apparently continuing. Military recruiting officials contend money is not the only reason people join the military, since it also attracts those looking for an opportunity for public service, travel, and structure and discipline.

Feith had been pushing for the ouster of Saddam for years. In 1998, him and Richard Perle sent a letter to President Bill Clinton proposing that the US team up with Ahmed Chalabi’s Iraqi National Congress to get rid of Saddam. Clinton refused.

As we all know, Ahmed had strong support within the Pentagon. In fact, two of his staunchest supporters were Feith, and Perle, chairman of the Defense Policy Board. Perle, an assistant defense secretary during the Reagan administration, was appointed by his old crony Donald Rumsfeld to lead the board in 2001.

It’s a well-known fact that the board exerts tremendous influence when it comes to war policies. As soon as Bush took office, Perle, Feith and Ahmed Chalabi all started working diligently together to get the war in Iraq off the ground, with Ahmed providing bogus intelligence about WMDs and bragging about a secret network within Iraq which could take over running the country after the invasion.

I’M AN ATHEIST, BUT . . .

Of all the questions I fielded during the course of my recent book tour, the only ones that really depressed me were those that began “I’m an atheist, BUT . . .” What follows such an opening is nearly always unhelpful, nihilistic or worse suffused with a sort of exultant negativity.

Notice, by the way, the distinction from another favourite genre: “I used to be an atheist, but . . .” That is one of the oldest tricks in the book, practised by, among many others, C S Lewis, Alister McGrath and Francis Collins. It is designed to gain street cred before the writer starts on about Jesus, and it is amazing how often it works. Look out for it, and be forewarned.

I’ve noticed five variants of I’m-an-atheist-buttery, and I’ll list them in turn, in the hope that others will recognize them, be armed against them, and perhaps extend the list by contributing examples from their own experience.

1. I’m an atheist, but religion is here to stay. You think you can get rid of religion? Good luck to you! You want to get rid of religion? What planet are you living on? Religion is a fixture. Get over it! I could bear any of these downers, if they were uttered in something approaching a tone of regret or concern. On the contrary. The tone of voice is almost always gleeful, and accompanied by a self-satisfied smirk. Anybody who opens with “I’m an atheist, BUT . . .” can be more or less guaranteed to be one of those religious fellow-travellers who, in Dan Dennett’s wickedly perceptive phrase, believes in belief. They may not be religious themselves, but they love the idea that other people are religious. This brings me to my second category of naysayers.

2. I’m an atheist, but people need religion. What are you going to put in its place? How are you going to comfort the bereaved? How are you going to fill the need? . . . Did you notice the patronizing condescension in the quotations I just listed? You and I, of course, are much too intelligent and well educated to need religion. But ordinary people, hoi polloi, the Orwellian proles, the Huxleian Deltas and Epsilon semi-morons, need religion. Well, I want to cultivate more respect for people than that. I suspect that the only reason many cling to religion is that they have been let down by our educational system and don’t understand the options on offer. This is certainly true of most people who think they are creationists. They have simply not been taught the alternative. Probably the same is true of the belittling myth that people ‘need’ religion. On the contrary, I am tempted to say “I believe in people . . .” And this leads me to the next example. . . . [...more]
