WASHINGTON (AFP) – Thousands of people demonstrated outside the White House to protest
Israel’s US-backed military operations in Lebanon and the Palestinian territories.

Stalwart Israeli Chief of Staff General Halutz barks first command of the Lebanese war...to his stockbroker
Unfortunate Stereotype Reinforced
A few hours after the kidnapping of two IDF soldiers and in the midst of discussions over whether to launch military operations in Lebanon, the chief of staff, Lt.-Gen. Dan Halutz, decided to sell off his personal investment portfolio, Maariv reported Tuesday morning.
According to the report, Halutz spoke to his investment broker about three hours after the Hizbullah cross-border raid, and asked him to sell all the assets in his portfolio, valued at about NIS 120,000. In the two days that followed, the Tel Aviv exchange dropped by about 8%.
Responding to the report, Halutz said “at that point I did not think or expect there would be a war.”

The "real issue" that is being ignored is the systematic destruction of any prospects for a viable Palestinian existence as Israel annexes valuable land and major resources (water particularly), leaving the shrinking territories assigned to Palestinians as unviable cantons, largely separated from one another and from whatever little bit of Jerusalem is to be left to Palestinians, and completely imprisoned as Israel takes over the Jordan valley (and of course controls air space, etc.). This program of "hitkansut" cynically disguised as "withdrawal" is of course completely illegal, in violation of Security Council resolutions and the unanimous decision of the World Court (including the dissenting statement of US Justice Buergenthal). If it is implemented as planned, it spells the end of the very broad international consensus on a two-state settlement that the US and Israel have unilaterally blocked for 30 years – matters that are so well documented that I do not have to review them here.
The US and Israel do not tolerate any resistance to these plans, preferring to pretend. falsely of course, that "there is no partner" as they proceed with programs that go back a long way. We may recall that Gaza and the West Bank are recognized to be a unit, so that if resistance to Israel's destructive and illegal progams is considered to be legitimate within the West Bank, then it is legitimate in Gaza as well, in reaction to Israeli actions in the West Bank.

If they are now refugees or are injured, I hope they find succor from the humanitarian organizations operating in Lebanon, and that they are not brutalized or violated by marauding Israeli thugs or, worse, brutalized or violated by marauding American/British mercenaries as in Iraq.

Eight Palestinian civilians – including three children – died in an explosion Friday on a day of Israeli artillery shelling.
They had been picnicking on a beach in northern Gaza. One seven-year-old Palestinian girl lost her father, step-mother and five siblings. In images broadcast around the world, the child, Huda Ghalia, is seen moments after the bombing struck. She runs to the site of the attack where she comes across the body of her deceased father. She collapses to the ground next to him, repeatedly crying for her father. At least 40 people were also injured in Friday’s bombing. Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas declared three days of mourning to mark what he called a “bloody massacre.”

“Every time we do something you tell me America will do this and will do that . . . I want to tell you something very clear: Don’t worry about American pressure on Israel. David Ben Gurion (the first Israeli Prime Minister): ” If I were an Arab leader, I would never sign an agreement with Israel. It is normal; we have taken their country. It is true God promised it to us, but how could that interest them? Our God is not theirs. There has been Anti-Semitism, the Nazis, Hitler, Auschwitz, but was that their fault? They see but one thing: we have come and we have stolen their country. Why would they accept that?” Quoted by Nahum Goldmann in Le Paraddoxe Juif (The Jewish Paradox), pp. 121-122.

And above all, let us hope for a new war with the Arab countries so that we may finally get rid of our troubles and acquire our space.” -From the diary of Moshe Sharett, Israeli’s first Foreign Minister from 1948-1956, and Prime Minister from 1954-1956.

In systematically failing to distinguish between Hezbollah fighters and civilian population in its three-and-a-half-week-old military campaign in Lebanon, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) have committed war crimes, according to a report released by Human Rights Watch Wednesday.
The 50-page report, “Fatal Strikes: Israel’s Indiscriminate Attacks Against Civilians in Lebanon,” detailed nearly two dozen cases of IDF attacks in which a total of 153 civilians, including 63 children, were killed in homes or motor vehicles.
In none of the cases did HRW researchers find evidence that there was a significant enough military objective to justify the attack, given the risks to civilian lives, while, in many cases, there was no identifiable military target. In still other cases cited in the report, Israeli forces appear to have deliberately targeted civilians.
“By consistently failing to distinguish between combatants and civilians, Israel has violated one of the most fundamental tenets of the laws of war: the duty to carry out attacks on only military targets,” according to the report.
“The pattern of attacks during the Israeli offensive in Lebanon suggests that the failures cannot be explained or dismissed as mere accidents; the extent of the pattern and the seriousness of the consequences indicate the commission of war crimes,” it concluded.

Mad Dog On A LeashI have been stunned by many things on the US political scene since I was jerked violently awake on Nov. 22, 1963. However, one thing that simply flew under the cuckoo’s nest of my awareness was the total influence on our Congress; the control of our media, our courts, our universities, our entire society—even our religion—by the state of Israel. I had no idea.
I’ve learned a lot about both Israel and the United States in the last five years—most of which I fervently wish I didn’t know. I learned very quickly in the wake of 9-11 that the neoconservatives in the US claim an ideological right—the Zionists in Israel a theological right—to do whatever they want to whomever they want whenever they want, and those who question their increasingly bloody aggression are labeled “anti-American” or “anti-Semitic.” Those who protest are ostracized from both religious and patriotic society (not to be confused with “civilized” society) and are immediately bombarded with ridicule and vicious ad hominems. Some receive death threats. Some receive death.
I learned that there is a vast difference between Jews, or people of Israel, and the warmongering Zionists who control the state of Israel, just as there is between most American citizens and the cowardly neo-fascist chickenhawks who control the United States. The people of both regimes cry out against the barbaric genocide and ethnic cleansing perpetrated in their name—they shriek, they march in protest, but the world media pushed the “mute” button long ago, and no sound emerges from the weeping masses. As these two “democracies” force their way across the Middle East, it’s as if Charles Manson is stalking the innocent with a mad dog on a leash. Neither can be reasoned with, and no living creature in their path is safe. But it is easy to tell where they’ve been, because the landscape is littered with rotting corpses of innocent men, women and children, with mass graves and displaced millions fleeing for their lives.

“Islamo-fascism,” a term that Americans heard George Bush use at an August 7 press conference, is the new term being thrown around among factions of the Christian right, from which he no doubt picked it up. It was much in use last month when the new lobby group, Christians United for Israel (CUFI), held their first “Washington-Israel Summit” at a Washington D.C. hotel. Amidst plenty of the celebratory song and dance usually associated with evangelical meetings and a three-course meal was served to over 2,000 attendees, a series of prominent religious and political speakers got up to promise unquestioning support for the state of Isael.

“Bush said to be frustrated by level of Public support for war in Iraq”
President Bush made clear in a private meeting this week that he is concerned about the lack of progress in Iraq. A source at the meeting said “I do think he was frustrated about why 10,000 Shiites would go into the streets and demonstrate against the United States”.

BRING US HOME
1) War profiteers enriched. Swimming in deficit dollars.
2) Israel protected from Saddam, way paved for Israeli expansion in region. Civil war successfully started as part of genocide program against Arabs. American lackeys do all the fighting, all the dying, all of the paying, much to the amusement of Israeli lobby. Welfare checks to Israel continue unabated.
3) Petroleum colony established. Oil reserves placed under control of American corporations/government.
4) Permanent bases established for permanent occupation of oil plunder, and to threaten other nations.
5) Propaganda engine lubricated by ruse of “patriotism”, paved the way for catastrophic domestic agenda.

As we all have our eyes fixated in Iraq, Israel, or the potential for another stolen election this year it is important to not forget the role of media in our everyday lives. So many Americans get their information from the tainted mainstream media machine run by the current government that it is a frightening prospect to merely hope the truth somehow gets through. I am sure we all know people who are seemingly good folk, but somehow they keep getting it wrong on such crucial matters such as election fraud, the war, or any number of Bush-GOP scandals. You have to realize the gauntlet of false news that is thrown at them each day, which is the basis for their political opinions.

Concern about uncontrolled military technology transfers
Journalist Jim Lobe suggests that the Franklin story is part of a larger investigation into transfer of sensitive military and dual-use technologies to Israel, including powerful case-management software. A concern is that Israeli companies have sold on sensitive U.S.-derived technology to potential U.S. strategic rivals such as Russia and China, and possibly on the black market where it can potentially be obtained by terrorist groups such as al-Qaeda. How to Deal with The Lobby – The De-Zionization of the American Mind
(Jean Bricmont, 12 August 2006)
member of the BRussells Tribunal executive committee
Americans are constantly told that they have to defend themselves against people who “hate them”, but without understanding why they are hated. Is the cause our secular democracy? Our appetite for oil? There are lots of democracies in the world that are far more secular than the
United States (Sweden, France…) and lots of places that want to buy oil at the best possible price (China) without arousing any noticeable hatred in the Middle East.
Of course, it is true that, throughout the Third World, Americans and Europeans are often considered arrogant and are not particularly liked. But the level of hatred that leads a large number of people to applaud an event like September 11 is peculiar to the Middle East. Indeed, the
main political significance of September 11 did not derive from the number of people killed or even the spectacular achievement of the attackers, but from the fact that the attack was popular in large parts of the Middle East. That much was understood by Americans leaders and infuriated them. Such a level of hatred calls for explanation.
And there can be only one explanation: United States support for Israel. It is indeed Israel that is the main object of hatred, for reasons we shall describe, but since the United States uncritically supports Israel on almost every issue, constantly praises it as “the only democracy in the Middle East” and provides its main financial backing, the result is a “transfer” of hatred.
